The exhibition is based on Aleksander Jackowski’s “Art known as naive”, the most important book in the Polish literature on the subject. Even though it has been 25 years since its release, the publication continues to be relevant; it most comprehensively explains the peculiarity and diversity of the phenomenon it describes.
The exhibition shows the impact of Jackowski’s thought on Polish museum collections, primarily on the creation of the collection of non-professional art at Muzeum Śląskie. Apart from the works of the authors described by Jackowski, shown are works of contemporary artists who, similarly to their predecessors, stand out from the entire artistic environment with their originality and power of expression. Aleksander Jackowski intended to devote to them his next book, “Art known as art brut”. Unfortunately, that book never came out.
The exhibition is also a recollection of the eminent Polish art researcher, sociologist, curator and editor-in-chief of “Contexts. Polish folk art” on the centenary of his birth.
