We Are Museums – with people and environment in mind

We Are Museums is a unique event that brings together museum professionals from all over the world. Every year, the participants of the conference share their experiences, set new trends in museology and learn about the role of contemporary museums in their communities.

The theme of this year’s edition of We Are Museums is the responsibility of museums for protecting the environment both in their immediate surroundings and through educational programs that make the public aware of the consequences of their decisions for future generations. Conference participants will discuss how museums can be not only places of culture, but also lead intensive social, environmental and economic transformations. They will learn how to cooperate with the local community and build a healthy, sustainable future together.

This year’ edition of We Are Museums is held in Muzeum Śląskie located in Katowice, in the heart of Upper Silesia – the region where post-industrial changes are taking place. Muzeum Śląskie is committed to preserving the material and natural heritage of the region. The activities carried out by the institution are to help better understand the industrial issues, but also – based on the painful history of the region – warn against processes that can have a disastrous impact on the community and its environment.
